Ice Hockey Adds Eight for 2013-14 Season

The Syracuse women's ice hockey team welcomes eight new additions to the program for the 2013-14 season. Head coach Paul Flanagan announced the incoming class of eight freshmen on Friday, June 21 which includes Morgan Blank, Erin Brand, Eleanor Haines, Larissa Martyniuk, Laurence Porlier, Elizabeth Scala, Heather Schwarz, and Jessica Sibley. The Orange heads into its sixth season in program history in 2013-14.
 "We are very excited with our incoming class of recruits, " Flanagan said. "Our assistant coaches, Alison Domenico and Brendon Knight, have done an excellent job securing eight individuals who will bring a wealth of athleticism and exceptional character to our program."

Blank is a native of Fort Mitchell, Ky., who played with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite in the 2012-13 season. The forward scored a total of 45 points last season of off 24 goals and 21 assists.
Brand, a forward and defenseman, hails from Long Beach, N.Y. At Northwood, she was honored with the coaches and sportsmanship awards this past season.
A forward from Huntington, N.Y., Haines was a two-year All-New England Selection at the Canterbury School. Haines was also named a team captain for the Canterbury School. In the 2011-12 season, Haines scored 15 goals and dished out nine assists for 24 points.
Martyniuk, a defenseman, played for the Shaftsbury School and was a member of Team Manitoba. Martyniuk comes to Syracuse from Winnipeg, Manitoba. This past season, she scored seven goals while tallying 32 assists for a total of 41 points.
Porlier played for both the Brewster Academy and Team Quebec. A forward from Maria, Quebec, Porlier recorded 33 points off of 22 goals and 11 assists in the 2012-13 season. She was also honored as 2012-13 Team Most Valuable Player.
A Rumford, R.I. native, Scala played for the National Sports Academy. In 2012-13, the forward scored 21 goals and recorded 16 assists for 37 points.
At the forward position, Schwarz scored 16 goals and handed out 10 assists in 2012-13 for a total of 26 points. Schwarz is from Naugatuck, Conn. and played for the Boston Shamrocks in 2012-13. She was named the 2012-13 Team Most Valuable Player and played in the JWHL All-Star game.
Sibley was honored as the 2012-13 JWHL Offensive Player of the Year after scoring 41 goals and 26 assists for 67 points. Sibley played for the Warner School and her hometown is Luseland, Saskatchewan. She also played in the JWHL All-Star game and was a member of Team Saskatchewan.
The Orange begin the 2013-14 campaign by hosting the University of Guelph in an exhibition contest on Friday, Sept. 27, before heading out east to Northeastern University and the University of New Hampshire during the weekend of Oct. 4.
