SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse men's rowing head coach Dave Reischman has announced the hiring of Justin Stangel and Jason Cottingham to his coaching staff. Stangel, a 2007 Syracuse graduate, returns to his alma mater as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator. Cottingham, a 2008 Alabama alumnus, has been appointed assistant coach/director of operations.
The pair completes Reischman's staff for the upcoming season, his 12th at the helm of the storied Orange program which has been ranked in the top 16 nationally every week since the beginning of the 2006 season.
Stangel joins the men's rowing staff after serving as an assistant coach with head coach Justin Moore's Orange women's program in 2013. He helped lead the team to victories at the Kittell and Orange Challenge cups, in addition to a second-place finish in the varsity eight and a third-place finish overall at the 2013 BIG EAST Championship. The team ranked No. 19 in the country following the conference regatta, its highest ranking in eight years.
"As an athlete in our program, Justin made his mark with his tremendous work-ethic and leadership ability," Reischman said. "Having him as a member of our coaching staff just seems like a natural progression. His experiences at Oxford and with the U.S. National Team have really allowed him to expand his rowing knowledge and I have no doubt that he will be able to pass this on to our athletes."
The former Orange oarsman has enjoyed a highly-decorated career with USRowing after departing Syracuse in 2007. Stangel was a member of the US Senior National Team from 2010-12, most recently training at the Oklahoma City High Performance Training Center. His national squad accolades include fourth-place in the pair at the 2010 World Championships, ninth-place in the coxless four at the 2010 Lucerne World Cup, eighth-place in the pair at the 2011 World Championships, sixth-place in the pair at the 2012 World Championships, and the 2012 Olympic Trials.
"I am really excited to come back to Syracuse University full-time and work with Dave," Stangel said. "I was part of his first recruiting class here and learned a lot from him over my four years at SU. I hope to be able to do the same with the current and future Orange student-athletes. In my mind there is no greater honor than returning to your alma mater to coach and this is truly my dream job, I wouldn't ask for anything more. This next year is going to take lots of hard work by the coaches and athletes to stay at the top nationally and I am ready to get stuck in and grind."
At SU, Stangel helped lead head coach Dave Reischman's Orange to nine cup race wins in his junior and senior seasons. He also helped guide Syracuse's varsity eight to a second-place finish in the petite final (eighth overall) at the 2006 IRA National Championship.
After graduating from Syracuse in 2007 with a degree in health and exercise science, the Dean's List student attended Oxford University in Oxford, England, earning a Master of Science in science and medicine of athletic performance in 2009. While at Oxford, Stangel served as vice president of the University Boat Club from 2008-09.
Cottingham comes to Syracuse after serving as the men's lightweight varsity volunteer assistant coach at Dartmouth since 2010. He assisted with the training and preparation for the entire varsity squad, while also being responsible for all equipment and boat maintenance. Cottingham oversaw the training for the third varsity eight in 2011 and 2012 and the second varsity eight in 2013.
"There are just some young coaches that when you meet them you just know you found the right guy," Reischman said. "That was the case with Jason. He is a tremendous student of the sport and has worked really hard to develop his coaching skills. I think Justin and Jason combine to give us a very energetic and knowledgeable assistant coaching staff. I am really looking forward to working with them."
Cottingham helped lead the Big Green's first varsity eight to a fourth-place finish at the 2013 IRA National Championship, as well as leading his 3V8 boats to seventh and fourth-place finishes at the EARC Sprints in 2011 and 2012, respectively, and a ninth-place finish in the 2V8 in 2012.
"I would like to thank Dave Reischman and the administration at Syracuse University for allowing me to work for an amazing athletic department with one of the most storied rowing programs in the country," Cottingham said. "This fantastic opportunity will be a great chance for me to help the team reach is true potential in becoming one of the dominant programs in the nation."
Cottingham gained experience through USRowing by serving as an assistant coach at the Pre-Elite Camp at the Oklahoma City National High Performance Center in the summer of 2011. While in New Hampshire, he also served as the head coach of the competitive master's women's program at the Upper Valley Rowing Foundation from 2010-12, leading them to top 10 finishes in the masters eight at the Head of the Charles all three years.
Cottingham graduated from Alabama in 2008 with a degree in aerospace engineering and mechanics and also received his master's degree in Tuscaloosa in aerospace engineering in 2010. While in Alabama, he was a co-founder and coach of the Black Warrior Rowing Club, a not-for-profit program for professionals in the community. Cottingham also served as the freshman/novice coach of the University of Alabama Crew Club from 2007-10 before serving as interim head coach in the spring of 2010, guiding the Crimson Tide to a fourth-place finish in the varsity four at the ACRA National Championship.
