#9 Orange Race #12 Navy, #13 Cornell for Goes Trophy Saturday in Ithaca

The 71st edition of the Goes Trophy brings one of college rowing's most storied rivalries back to the Cayuga Inlet on Saturday, as #9 Syracuse looks to claim a program-best sixth consecutive trophy against #12 Navy and #13 Cornell. Racing begins at 8:45 am with the Third Varsity Eight and is followed by the Goes Trophy Race (V8) at 8:55 am, the 2V8 (9:20 am), and the 4V8 (9:30 am). After racing concludes there will be Goes and Stagg Trophy presentations on the dock of the Cornell boathouse. Fans unable to attend can watch live on ESPN+ or here if they are watching from outside the US.Â
Steeped in history dating back to 1955, the Goes Trophy was created by Clifford "Tip" Goes, a member of Syracuse's Class of 1914, to honor three of the sport's pioneering coaches — James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. The trophy is awarded annually to the winner of the Varsity Eight race between the three programs.
Also on the line Saturday is the Stagg Trophy, presented to the team compiling the most overall points across the heavyweight races. Named after Norman G. Stagg, the late Tompkins County judge and former Cornell oarsman, the Stagg Trophy has been awarded since 1967 with Navy holding a commanding lead in the all-time standings. The Orange have claimed the cup in each of the last six contested years, winning it every season from 2018 through 2025 with the exception of 2020 and 2021, which were not contested due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Syracuse enters Saturday looking to extend that streak to seven.
The Orange swept Cornell and Navy last spring, winning the Goes Trophy for the fifth straight time and claiming their sixth consecutive Stagg Trophy — the team points cup awarded to the program compiling the most points across the heavyweight races. The Orange come in with momentum after going undefeated in the 2V8 at the Princeton Invite last weekend, building off a historic 2025 campaign that saw SU achieve its highest-ever team finish at the IRA National Championship.
Navy enters Ithaca ranked 12th and hungry to end the five-year streak for the Orange, while Cornell returns to home waters looking to recapture a trophy it has claimed 24 times in the race's history. The Big Red split with Boston University last weekend and will have the added edge of competing on familiar water. Saturday marks the first time since 2022 that all three programs enter the race ranked in the top 15 of the national poll.
Since the race began in 1955, Navy leads all-time with 26 wins, Cornell has 23 victories and Syracuse has claimed 18 — including five straight from 2019-2025 (2020 and 2021 were not contested due to COVID-19). A Syracuse win Saturday would give the Orange their longest winning streak in Goes Trophy history.
