BALTIMORE – Five former Syracuse men's lacrosse players – Matt Abbott, Steven Brooks, John Galloway, John Lade and Casey Powell – have been selected to try out for the U.S. Men's National Lacrosse Team, which will defend its world title at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship in Denver, Colo.
A total of 98 candidates are in the Team USA tryout pool. Tryouts will take place from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 at Goucher College in Baltimore, Md.
Abbott and Brooks play for the Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and both players were named MLL All-Stars in 2013. Abbott helped lead the Orange to back-to-back NCAA championships in 2008 and 2009. A first-team All-American as a senior, Abbott ranks 10th in Syracuse history with 212 ground balls. Brooks scored 41 points, including 28 goals, in 2008 to win the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award as the country's best midfielder. He finished his SU career with 67 goals and 101 points.
Galloway earned two first-team All-America nods and also won two national championships with the Orange (2008, 2009). A two-time winner of the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award as the nation's top goalie, Galloway set the NCAA records for minutes played (3,776) and most wins (59).
Lade was a three-year starter at close defense and helped key Syracuse's 2009 NCAA title run. He was a two-time first-team All-American and won the William C. Schmeisser Award as the country's most outstanding defenseman as a senior in 2011.
Galloway and Lade currently compete for the MLL's Rochester Rattlers.
Powell competed for Team USA at the 1998 and 2006 World Championships, helping the Americans bring home the gold in '98. A four-time Orange All-American, Powell won the USILA's Raymond J. Enners Award as national player of the year twice. He finished his career as the program's all-time leading scorer (287 points).
A total of 156 players submitted tryout applications, which were considered by a selection committee that included current and past U.S. national team coaches and players, as well as current college and professional coaches. Team USA head coach Richie Meade (Furman University) will oversee the tryout process. Following tryouts, U.S. Lacrosse will release the 40-man 2014 U.S. Men's National Team.
