The SU football team is nearing the end of its trip to Fort Drum, capping off practices with an intra-squad scrimmage. Military personnel and their families were able to watch the practice and scrimmage and participated in an autograph session with the players.
Â
Before the Orange took the field, the team set up drill stations for the Fort Drum Mountaineers, the youth football league on post. The children of the soldiers were instructed by the coaches and players in all positions.
Â
"It was a great time, the little kids all starry-eyed," Macky MacPherson said. "It was a great time. They're all giving a lot of effort. They're ages 5-12, so those are the glory days of football. That was just a great time for everyone involved, and us included. I was laughing my butt off."
Â
Coach Shafer held a controlled scrimmage, giving extra playing time to the second string running backs and mixing the first and second string on offense.
Â
"We tried to get some of the younger running backs a lot of carries today. I wanted to see some of those young kids run the ball, there were a couple good runs here and there," Coach Shafer said. "I gave Terrell Hunt and Drew Allen reps with the ones and the twos. I was as much interested in their reps with the twos, when they don't have guys in front of them that they feel as sound with."
Â
Tomorrow morning the squad will have an early start and play a few rounds of paintball before heading back to Syracuse in the early afternoon.
Â
"It's been good. Bringing us together as a team, a unity and camaraderie with one another," Jay Bromley said of the Fort Drum experience. "We've got a lot to work on, but we got closer and got better this week, so we did what we were supposed to do."
