Despite two losses to open the season head coach Scott Shafer is "disappointed, not discouraged" and sees progress in the team's performance. The Orange will begin its three-game home-stand on Saturday against Wagner at 4:00 p.m. (ESPN3.com). All Syracuse fans are invited to participate in 'Take a Kid to the Game Day', an opportunity for a free youth ticket for every adult ticket purchased to the Wagner game. Season ticket holders are also eligible for free youth tickets. Call 1-888-DOMETIX for assistance in obtaining youth tickets.
"I was pleased with what the team did against Northwestern as far as the targeted areas that we focused in on," Shafer said. "On first down we want to gain four yards or more, 60 percent of the time. Against Penn State we were at 21 percent and after the Northwestern game we were at 57 percent, which is a drastic improvement against a good defense. The other area was third down. Third down is key. We were 46 percent against Northwestern on third down 'move the chains mode'. The third area I was most pleased with watching the game was that we broke 40 tackles against Northwestern for 179 yards. That tripled our production as compared to the Penn State game. As disappointed as I was with the loss, I wasn't discouraged."
Shafer is looking forward to continuing his team's progress against Wagner, an FCS opponent. The Seahawks are not being taken lightly, however, as they are coming off an NEC championship season.
"Wagner is a championship team, regardless of what level they are. They won the NEC championship last year and they have a very good coaching staff. Anytime you win a championship, you have to find ways to beat teams that you weren't supposed to beat. They had a storied season last year and I think that they're coaches have done a great job bringing talent to that team to keep ramping it up. For us, focusing on controlling the things that you can and focusing on your own play is the best formula to go out and win a game. They are a championship caliber football team that will be playing sky high."Â
Season and single-game tickets can be purchased online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
