Forward progress is the theme so far this season for Syracuse. Head coach Scott Shafer is impressed with the improvements the team has made through the first three games, culminating in a decisive 54-0 victory against Wagner. Tulane is up next for the Orange, who will take on the Green Wave in the Carrier Dome on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (ACC Regional Sports Network).Â
Shafer's season plan has been to target certain areas to work on and so far he has seen results each week. Last Saturday was no different.
"I'm really big on targeting the areas that I feel are necessary to give us a chance to win, and then practicing those types of things," Shafer said. "For instance, we talk about the first down and defensively we won that battle big time. Seventy percent of the time we won the first-down war. Our offense has the same exact goal, except they want to get four yards or more. They did a good job, but they were still a little bit short at 55 percent. Third down, both sides dominated. Defense was 86 percent in the win category. Offense was 59 percent, which their goal is 45 percent."
The team's turnover ratio has been a point of emphasis as well. SU struggled with it against Northwestern, but didn't turn the ball over against Wagner.
"I was excited that the kids did a good job focusing in on the things that we worked on throughout the course of the week," Shafer said. "Turnover ratio was one of the big ones. We were in a situation where we were down, we had four [turnovers] given up the week before. I think the kids did a good job not turning the ball over on offense and getting plus three. So now we are even for the season and we need to go out and get this victory against Tulane so that we are even across the board as we continue to move forward this season."
The Syracuse football coaching staff will be wearing patches on their sleeves to bring awareness to Coach to Cure MD during the game on Saturday. FBS schools around the nation take part in the program to help raise money to battle Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a disease that affects boys across all races and cultures. Fans can donate to the cause by visiting www.CoachtoCureMD.org.Â
Saturday is also "Patriotic Day" so wear some red, white and blue along with your orange! Military personnel will be recognized at halftime. The Air Force will also hold a Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) swear-in ceremony before the game.
Season and single-game tickets can be purchased online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
