
Cleveland and Serratore Honored As Orange Scholar-Athletes

SYRACUSE, N.Y- Â Senior Clay Cleveland (Boxford, Mass.), a fullback on the football team, and Nicolette Serratore (Oakville, Ontario), a junior on the volleyball roster, have been selected as the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for Sept. 30, 2013.
Cleveland, a former walk-on was named a starter at the beginning of the 2013 season. Against Tulane, Cleveland scampered into the end zone on each of his first two receptions and added one more catch for a total of 13 yards to help propel Syracuse to a 52-17 win against the Green Wave. He has played in all four games this season and 20 overall the past three seasons. The senior was selected to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team in 2011 and 2012 and is a four-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Cleveland is majoring in management in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.
Serratore has been the best all-around player this season for the Orange, leading the team with 150 kills 139 digs. The outside hitter also ranks third on the squad with 29 total blocks and seven service aces. Serratore has posted three-double-doubles in her last four outings and has a total of four so far this year. She was named the Candlewood Suites Challenge MVP and also earned all-tournament honors at the Candlewood Suites Invitational earlier this season. Serratore, a four-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering & Computer Science.
After a week off, Cleveland and the Orange football team (2-2) return to action for their debut Atlantic Coast Conference game against nationally ranked No. 3 Clemson on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX. Serratore and the volleyball squad (5-9, 0-2 ACC) continue their home stretch with a pair of weekend matches against No. 14 North Carolina on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. and N.C. State on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
