
Rice, Pagano Scholar-Athlete Honorees

Junior Kevin Rice (Skaneateles, N.Y.) of the men's lacrosse team and graduate student Sarah Pagano (Ringwood, N.J.) are this week's Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week.

Rice enters this season after an impressive sophomore campaign. He was second on the team in both points (55) and assists (32) and had 23 goals on the year including three game-winners, which tied with teammates Luke Cornetti and Derek Maltz for the second-most in the BIG EAST last year. Rice was honored with the Elite 89 Award for maintaining the highest cumulative GPA of any player participating in the Final Four and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District I First Team and the BIG EAST All-Academic team. Last weekend he scored 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in the scrimmages with Hofstra and Le Moyne. Rice is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences as a history major.

Pagano, a distance runner with the track and field team, has already gotten off to a good start this season. At the Cornell Greg Page Relays, the first meet of the year she finished with a personal-best time of 9:34.42 in the 3,000-meter run, which ranks 26th in the NCAA. Last indoor season Pagano took second place in the 5,000 meter run at the ECAC Championships and qualified for the NCAA East Prelims in the 10,000 meter run during the outdoor season, finishing with a career-best time of 33:45.05. Pagano is also enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences and is majoring in Biochemistry and Nutrition.

Rice and the men's lacrosse team begin their season on Monday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome against Siena but first travel to Towson, Md. this weekend for scrimmages against Towson and Bucknell on Saturday, Feb. 1 starting at 10 a.m.

Pagano and the track and field team head to Penn State for the annual Penn State National Invitational on Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1.
