"Hoops For The Stars" Recognition Tuesday
1/9/2014 11:58:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The 'Hoops for the Stars' program will be highlighted with an on-court presentation to honor more than 30 area youth at the Syracuse University men's basketball game against Georgia Tech on March 4 at the Carrier Dome.
Similar events were held at games against North Carolina and Notre Dame earlier this season.
For the sixth year in a row, Syracuse University and the National Grid Foundation have partnered to implement the program to provide positive reinforcement, recognition of improved academic performance and attendance in school, a decrease in negative behavior, and positive contributions to the community. The program underscores a shared commitment by Syracuse University Athletics and the National Grid Foundation to create opportunities for solutions to educational issues within the Syracuse City School District.
For th efirst time, the most outstanding student in each grade will be awarded with the Hoops for the Stars "Rising Star" trophy -- an award presented to an exceptional achiever in each grade.
"We are thrilled to partner with the National Grid Foundation for the 'Hoops for the Stars' program for the sixth year in a row," said Syracuse Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. "The program has been a great success, and it shows how Syracuse University Athletics and our community can continue to work together to enrich the educational experience for the youth. We thank the National Grid Foundation for making this all possible."
Through the National Grid Foundation's commitment of $30,000, Syracuse University Athletics is providing tickets to 12 men's basketball home games. Ticket recipients include 2,300 student achievers from the Syracuse City School District's eight middle schools and a parent or guardian to select Orange men's games.
"The National Grid Foundation is pleased to support the 'Hoops for the Stars' program," said Melanie Littlejohn, National Grid Foundation Board Member. "The program continues to demonstrate all that is good and the amazing things that come from organizations working together to positively impact the lives of students. At the close of another great HFTS season, we are especially excited about the 'Rising Star' award. This is a special occasion to honor students for an exceptional job well done. While all the children are bright stars, we want to recognize the most outstanding student achievers."
