GAME OVERVIEW
• Syracuse makes its second-ever trip to Wake Forest for a 12 p.m. showdown with the Demon Deacons on Saturday, Oct. 18 at BB&T Field.
• The game will be televised on RSN. Bob Rathbun (pxp), Coy Wire (analyst) and Olivia Harlan (sidelines) have the call.
• Both teams are seeking their first Atlantic Coast Conference victories of the season.
• The Orange is coming off a 38-20 loss against then-No. 1 Florida State at the Carrier Dome.Â
• Syracuse is 1-0 in true road games this year with a 40-3 on Sept. 13 at Central Michigan.
• Wake Forest is 2-0 at home this season. The Demon Deacons had a bye last week.
LONG PRODUCTIVE IN DEBUT
• QB AJ Long made his college football debut against top-ranked Florida State on Oct. 11, becoming just the ninth true freshman (and first since Andrew Robinson in 2006) to take snaps for the Orange since freshmen became eligible in 1972.
• Long connected with rookie Steve Ishmael on a 22-yard scoring pass in the third quarter to become the fi rst Orange true freshman QB to throw a TD in his first college game. Long hooked up with Ishmael again in the fourth quarter for a second touchdown that produced the 38-20 final score.
• Overall, Long had the most statistically successful debut of any SU true freshman signal caller, completing more passes (16) for more yards (167) than any of the previous eight did in their initial college games.
LONG LIKELY TO START AGAINST WAKE FOREST
• With Austin Wilson suff ering an injury last week versus Florida State, AJ Long is likely to start at quarterback Saturday against Wake Forest. Long would be the fi rst true freshman QB to start a game for the Orange since current SU men's basketball academic advisor Joe Fields in 2004. Fields started the fi rst three games of the year before giving way to Perry Patterson.
• Overall, four previous Orange QBs have started at least one game as a true freshman (Fields, Todd Norley - 1982, Greg Christodulu - 1982, Ron Farneski - 1976).
THE WAKE FOREST SERIES
• Syracuse is 2-1 all-time against Wake with both teams defending their home turf. The Orange beat the Demon Deacons at the Dome in 2013 (13-0) and 2011 (36-29). Wake Forest was a 20-10 winner at Groves Stadium (now BB&T Field) in 2006.
• The 2006 and 2011 meetings were both season openers.
• The Orange has won the last two pairings, including rallying from a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime and eventually win, 36-29. Orange QB Ryan Nassib passed for three touchdowns, including the 4-yard winner to Van Chew in the first OT.
LAST TIME VS. WAKE FOREST
• The Orange held Wake Forest to 198 total yards in a 13-0 shutout of the Demon Deacons on Nov. 2, 2013 at the Carrier Dome.
• It was SU's first shutout against a team from one of the Power 5 conferences since the Orange blanked Wisconsin, 34-0, in 1997.
• SU forced 12 Wake Forest punts, the second-most ever for an Orange opponent in one game.
• Terrel Hunt scored on a six-yard run and Brisly Estime caught a 25-yard TD pass from WR Jarrod West for the game's only points.
• Estime made his first career start and caught nine passes for 62 yards.
A WIN AGAINST WAKE FOREST WOULD …
• Be SU's 708th all-time victory, the 16th-most among FBS schools and second-most of any ACC program.
• Snap the Orange's four-game losing streak and mark the team's fi rst conference win of the year.
• Extend SU's winning streak to three games against Wake Forest.
• Mark the Orange's fi rst road win against the Demon Deacons.
• Even Syracuse record under head coach Scott Shafer at 10-10.
