Freshman quarterback AJ Long honored by the organization after winning his starting debut
After throwing for 171 yards and rushing for a touchdown in the Orange's 30-7 win over Wake Forest on Saturday, freshman quarterback AJ Long was named ECAC Rookie of the Week.
Long completed 22 of his 32 attempts and scored the first rushing touchdown of his career to give the Orange a 10-7 lead in the game. His 22 completions were the most in a game by an SU true freshman signal caller, eclipsing the previous mark of 18 set by Todd Norley vs. Maryland in 1982.
Â
Long accounted for 80 of 92 yards on SU's only offensive scoring drive of the game, and capped the 15-play march with a 4-yard TD run at 7:50 mark of the second quarter. He was 5-for-7 through the air for 56 yards and rushed twice four 24 yards during the series, including a career-long, 20-yard scramble on a third-and-4 that kept the drive alive. Long's score gave the Orange its first lead of game at 10-7, an advantage SU never relinquished.
Â
Overall, Long is the fifth true freshman QB in team history to start a game, joining Joe Fields (2004), Norley (1982), Greg Christodulu (1982) and Ron Farneski (1976).
Syracuse returns to action on Saturday at Clemson.
