Former SU rower earns honor
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Former Syracuse men's rower Mike Gennaro was honored by USRowing as the National Team Athlete of the Year, USRowing announced on Tuesday. The National Team Athlete of the Year was selected in the 2014 Fan's Choice Awards.
The 2014 Fan's Choice Awards recipients were voted by USRowing fans across the country, where rowers were nominated based on their outstanding contributions to the sport in 2014.
Gennaro was a member of the men's four at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands, where they raced to a silver medal finish. Prior in the season, Gennaro raced to gold and bronze medal finishes at the men's four and eight, respectively, at the 2014 World Rowing Championships II in Alguebelette, France. Mike is a special mentor to both Philadelphia Youth Rowing and the US Junior National team, as well.
During his career at Syracuse, Gennaro helped the team to a sixth-place finish at the annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) regatta during his junior season. Gennaro also was a member of the Under 23 Men's National Team, where he won a silver medal in the Under 23 men's eight at the 2010 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
Gennaro will be officially recognized at the Golden Oars Awards Dinner on Nov. 20 in New York City.Â
