GAME OVERVIEW
• Syracuse makes its first trip to Death Valley on Saturday, Oct. 25 for a 7 p.m. clash against Clemson at Memorial Stadium.
• The game will be televised on ESPNU. Syracuse grad Anish Shroff (pxp) and former Colorado State and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Kelly Stouffer (analyst) have the call.
• The Orange is 2-0 in true road games this season and is coming off its first ACC win of the year, beating Wake Forest, 30-7, at BB&T Field.
• Clemson had not lost at home this season. The Tigers are 4-0 at Memorial Stadium and 5-2 overall after beating Boston College, 17-13, on the road last weekend.
• Saturday's game will be the Orange's first ever played in the state of South Carolina.
Â
WELSH, LONG WIN ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS
• Syracuse had a pair of players win Atlantic Coast Conference honors following its win at Wake Forest on Oct. 18. Senior DE Robert Welsh was selected as the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week and QB AJ Long was named ACC Rookie of the Week.
• Welsh scored one of SU's two defensive touchdowns against the Demon Deacons. He intercepted the second pass of his career and returned it 42 yards to extend the SU lead to 17-7 with 5:05 to play in the opening half. In addition, Welsh notched three tackles, tied his personal best with 2.0 tackles for loss and broke up a pass to finish with a game-high two passes defended.
• It's the second career ACC weekly honor for Welsh, who was named the co-ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his performance in the 2013 season opener against Penn State.
• Long became the first true freshman quarterback in Syracuse history to win his starting debut. He completed 22-of-32 passes for 171 yards and scored the first rushing touchdown of his career. His 22 completions were the most in a game by an SU true freshman signal caller, eclipsing the previous mark of 18 set by Todd Norley vs. Maryland in 1982.
Â
SHUFFLING THE DECK
• Due to injury, the Orange has used six different offensive line combinations in seven games.
• Eight different players have started at least once with Nick Robinson (RG), Ivan Foy (RT) and John Miller (C) all missing at least one game because of injury.
• Preseason All-ACC left tackle Sean Hickey is the only member of the group to start all seven games. Hickey has a streak of 33 consecutive starts overall.
• Because of the moving parts, it's that much more impressive that first-year coach Joe Adam's unit is tied for fourth in the FBS in fewest sacks allowed (5).
Â
THE CLEMSON SERIES
• The all-time series between Syracuse and Clemson is tied, 1-1, and Saturday's game marks the Orange's first trip to Death Valley.
• SU was victorious in the meeting between the the two team, shutting out the Tigers, 41-0, at the 1996 Gator Bowl (after the 1995 season). Syracuse led 20-0 after the first quarter and bowl MVP Donovan McNabb passed for 309 yards (13-for-23) and three touchdowns. He also rushed for a score.
• Clemson evened the series with a 49-14 victory last season at the Carrier Dome.
Â
LAST TIME VS. CLEMSON
• Clemson defeated Syracuse, 49-14, in the Orange's inaugural ACC game on Oct. 5, 2013.
• The Tigers led 21-0 after the first quarter and 35-7 at the half.
• Jerome Smith led the Orange, rushing for 125 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Prince-Tyson Gulley also scored for Syracuse on a 28-yard run in the third quarter.
• Tajh Boyd passed for 455 yards and five touchdowns for the Tigers.
• Current Buffalo Bills receiver Sammy Watkins had four catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. Adam Humphries also had a 100-yard receiving day, catching three passes for 118 yards and two scores.
Â
SYRACUSE-CLEMSON CONNECTIONS
• There is no one on the Orange roster from South Carolina.
• Two Clemson players are from the state of New York – Ebenezer Ogundeko (Brooklyn) and Isaiah Battle (Brooklyn).
• Like Ogundeko and Battle, Syracuse's Brandon Reddish, Ivan Foy, Wayne Williams and Wayne Morgan are Brooklyn natives.
• Orange WR Keenan Hale and Clemson CB Garry Peters and DT Grady Jarrett hail from Conyers, Ga.
• 'Cuse center Donnie Foster along with Clemson TE Milan Richard are from Savannah, Ga.
• Orange linebackers coach Clark Lea and Clemson OL coach Robbie Caldwell were both members of the same 2005 Vanderbilt staff. Lea was an offensive grad assistant. Caldwell mentored the Commodores' offensive linemen and was assistant head coach.
• Caldwell also worked with SU Assistant AD for Athletic Performance Will Hicks for 14 years (1986-99) at NC State.
Â
A WIN AGAINST CLEMSON WOULD …
• Be SU's 709th all-time victory, the 16th-most among FBS schools and second-most of any ACC program.
• Make Syracuse 3-0 in true road games this season.
• End Clemson's six-game home winning streak, which dates back to Nov. 14, 2013.
• Mark SU's first win against a ranked opponent on the road since beating No. 20 West Virginia in 2010.
• Even Syracuse's record at 4-4, including a 2-2 mark in ACC play.
• Give the Orange a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with the Tigers.
