'Cuse tops Penn State 3-1
The Syracuse hockey team opened CHA play with a win over Penn State on Friday night, behind goals from Julie Knerr, Allie LaCombe and Kaillie Goodnough.
'Cuse rolled to a 3-1 win in a game it would never trail and owned a 34-20 shots advantage.
Goodnough got the scoring started in the first period on a mini breakaway. Emily Costales found Goodnough in space, where she snapped off a low shot that beat Nittany Lions' netminder Celine Whitlinger.
Penn State would answer midway through the second period, when Amy Petersen used a power play to even the score at one, but Knerr gave the Orange back the advantage less than a minute later.
Stephanie Grossi started the play by keeping the puck in the zone and allowing Knerr to walk it along the blue line before firing a shot through traffic for the goal.
'Cuse would take the 2-1 advantage into the locker room, but not long after beginning the third period, LaCombe would give the Orange some breathing room when she scored on a feed from Grossi and Goodnough to put the game out of reach.
Jenn Gilligan made 19 saves in the win.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak and allowed the Orange to open conference play with a valuable two points.
Syracuse also moved to 9-0-0 all-time against Penn State with the win.
The Orange will look for two more points on Saturday when they host game two with Penn State at 3 p.m.
