Â
Senior forward Lauren Brooks and freshman forward Lies Lagerweij both tallied two goals on the day. Senior back Jordan Page and junior forward Emma Russell each had a score of their own in the team's regular season finale, as well.
Â
Massachusetts (9-9) jumped on the board early against Syracuse (13-4). UMass sophomore forward Hailey Cockrum stole a pass from junior goalkeeper Jess Jecko and shot the ball into the net in the fourth minute of action.
Â
Syracuse responded with a flurry of goals over a 10-minute period. Lagerweij tied up the match in the 18th minute. Following a penalty corner, Lajerweig collected a pass from junior midfielder Alyssa Manley and slotted it in for her fourth goal of 2014.
Â
Nine minutes later, Lagerweij struck again. The Delft, Netherlands native scored her third goal off a penalty corner this season to put Syracuse ahead 2-1. Page and Russell were credited with assists on the play.
Â
Not even one minute after, Russell scored to put the Orange ahead 3-1. The Enniskerry, Ireland native blasted a hard shot from the left side into the right corner for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
Â
Out of the halftime break, Syracuse carried over its momentum from the opening 35 minutes of play. Manley dribbled into the circle in the 40th minute of play. She found Brooks in front of the net and Brooks finished the play, giving Syracuse a 4-1 edge.
Â
In the 48th minute, Brooks found the back of the net for a second time to give Syracuse a commanding 5-1 lead. Freshman forward Lieke Visser dribbled in from the right end, passed to Brooks, and Brooks shot it into the left side.
Â
UMass responded with three unanswered goals in a six-minute span. Cockrum, freshman back Melanie Kreusch, and junior midfielder Brooke Sabia all tallied goals during that stretch to cut the Syracuse lead to 5-4 with 15 minutes to play.
Â
Syracuse ended the scoring threat with a goal of its own with 12 minutes left. Page scored off a penalty stroke to secure the team's 6-4 victory.
