
Lax Nabs Two Scholar-Athletes Of the Week

Derek Maltz of the men's team and Amy Cross of the women's squad earned the honor for the week of Feb. 10
Two lacrosse student-athletes were named Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week just in time for each of their home openers. Derek Maltz, a senior attack on the men's team and Amy Cross, a senior midfielder on the women's team open their home schedule this week with the men's team taking on Siena on Monday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. and the women's team facing Canisius on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. in a double-header with the men's team, who plays Albany at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

Maltz is a co-captain for the second straight year and enters the 2014 season after an impressive junior season. He had the second-most goals on the team last year with 32, an average of 1.6 per game, and had 11 multi-goal games in his 20 starts. His performance on the field earned him a spot on the 2013 All-BIG EAST Second Team but he also made a conference team for his accomplishments in the classroom, being named a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team for the second straight year. Maltz is a member of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and the College of Arts and Sciences, double-majoring in Public Relations and Psychology.

Cross enters her senior campaign after a solid junior season in which she scored 16 goals and assisted on four. So far this season she has netted two goals in just two games played, both in the 21-7 win at Jacksonville. Cross was a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team in each of her first three seasons. She is a member of the School of Education as an Inclusive Education major.
