ATLANTA -- The play of senior C.J. Fair and freshman Tyler Ennis continues to garner national recognition as both were named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Top 30 list released on Thursday, Feb. 13. The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is awarded annually to the men's and women's college basketball players of the year.
The Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors chose the mid-season team of 30 candidates. The Naismith voting academy narrows that group down to four finalists on the final ballot. The voting academy, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country, base its criteria on player performance throughout the season.
Fair is Syracuse's leading scorer this season, averaging 16.7 points per game. He has reached double figures in scoring in 22 of 24 games this season. He ranks seventh in the ACC in scoring and ninth in field goal percentage. Fair was named the ACC and Naismith Trophy Player of the Week after scoring a career-high 28 points in Syracuse's overtime victory against Duke. Fair, the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, is also a member of the Wooden Award Top 25 list, the Oscar Robertson Trophy midseason watch list and is a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.
Ennis, who is one of six freshmen on the top 30 list, leads the ACC in assists, averaging 5.7 per game. He is one of four members of the Orange averaging double figures in scoring, contributing 11.9 points per game. Ennis ranks second in the nation in assist/turnover ratio and is 19th in total steals and steals per game. He has dished out nine assists in four games this season. Ennis, a four-time ACC Rookie of the Week honoree, is also a member of the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25, the Oscar Robertson Trophy and Wayman Tisdale Award midseason watch lists.
The four finalists for the award will be announced on March 23. The winner will be announced on April 6.
