
Johnson, Taylor Take ORange Scholar-Athlete Honors

Senior forward Cara Johnson of the hockey team and senior long jumper Franklin Taylor of the men's track and field team earned Orange Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors on Monday. Both Johnson and Taylor are set to compete in their respective conference championships with Taylor heading to Clemson, S.C. for the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships and Johnson staying home for the first round of the College Hockey America Tournament.

Both events are held on Friday, Feb. 28- Saturday, 29 with the potential for a game on Sunday, March 2 for hockey if there is a need for a third game in the series.

Johnson has been on a tear in the last few games, scoring three goals and an assist over the past six games, the most goals scored by an SU player in that span. Included in those goals was her first career game-winner and her one assist was on a game-winning score. She has tallied 20 points off five goals and 15 assists in her career. Johnson is a member of the College of Arts and Sciences and the SI Newhouse School of Public Communications as a political science and broadcast & digital journalism double major. She is also minoring in English and textual studies.

Taylor has gotten off to a solid start this spring, taking two-second place finishes during the indoor season including his best mark of the year at the Cornell Upstate Challenge, leaping 7.33 meters. During the 2013 outdoor season, Taylor made his final jump his longest, taking eighth place at the IC4A Championship with a mark of 7.36 meters. During the 2013 indoor season, Taylor was a BIG EAST Champion in the long jump with a career-best mark of 7.44 meters. Also a member of the SI Newhouse School of Public Communications, Taylor is earning a master's degree with a concentration in magazine, newspaper and online journalism.
