First Time Since 2011-12
Syracuse's thrilling overtime win coupled with Arizona's buzzer-beating loss has made the Orange the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation in both the Associated Press top 25 and USA Today Coaches poll for this first time this season.
The last time SU was the top-ranked team was for a six-week period that stretched from Dec. 12, 2011 to Jan. 22, 2012. Syracuse (21-0, 8-0 ACC) has won its first 21 games this season, eclipsing the school record of 20 victories which was set last time the club owned the number one spot. SU, along with Wichita State (23-0) remain as the only unbeaten teams in the Division I ranks following the loss by the Wildcats on Saturday night.
The Orange received all 65 first place votes in the Associated Press top 25 to become the first unanimous selection since Duke from Dec. 27, 2010 to Jan. 9, 2011. Arizona, which was ranked first for the past eight weeks, slipped to number two. The remaining top-five stayed the same with Florida at number three followed by Wichita State and San Diego State.
Syracuse was listed first on all 32 ballots in the coaches poll as well. The last team to accomplish the feat during the regular season was Kentucky on March 5, 2012. SU also held the distinction as the unanimous number one in the coaches poll on Jan. 16, 2012. Wichita State jumped all the way to second while Arizona fell to third. Florida and San Diego State rounded out the top-five.
The Orange play for the first time as the top team in the country on Monday, Feb. 3 against Notre Dame.
