
Safdar, Wilson Make the Grade for Orange Scholar-Athlete

Senior David Wilson (Smithsburg, Md.) of the men's track and field team and junior Komal Safdar (Mason, Ohio) of the tennis team have earned Orange Scholar-Athlete honors for the week of March 17.
Wilson, a distance runner, had the best indoor season of his career, setting personal records in both the 3,000-meter run and the 5,000-meter run. His time of 8:26.14 in the 3,000 was set at the Boston University Valentine Invitational and his career-best mark of 14:52.13 in the 5,000 was set at the Penn State National Invitational for an 11th place finish. Wilson had three top-10 finishes during the indoor season including two at the Greg Page Relay hosted by Cornell in the 5,000-meter run (fourth) and in the Distance Medley Relay (seventh). His best finish of the year was at the Cornell Upstate Challenge where he took second place in the 3,000-meter run. Wilson is currently enrolled in the LC Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science as a biomedical engineering major.

Safdar, who competes in both singles and doubles, has won three matches on her own and two with a teammate so far this season. She defeated Florida State's Majlena Pedersen to earn the team's fourth and winning point in the team's second victory of the season. Â All three of her singles wins were in conference play and she accounted for two of the team's six victories against Virginia Tech. Since returning to the Orange lineup, she has been an integral part of Syracuse returning to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, debuting at 60th on the list. Safdar is currently enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences as a biochemistry major.

Safdar and the tennis squad travel to Coral Gables, Fla. to take on Miami in a conference matchup on Friday, March 21 at 11 a.m. before returning home to face another ACC opponent, Boston College, on Sunday, March 23 at 10 a.m. at Drumlins Tennis Center.

Wilson and the track and field team kick off the outdoor season at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by Georgia Tech, on Saturday, March 29.
