SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Winners in its last five games and 13 of the last 18, the Syracuse softball team will put its streak on the line on Wednesday, April 16 with a doubleheader at home against Atlantic Coast Conference rival Boston College beginning at 3 p.m. The Orange will also head to Colgate on Thursday, April 17 for a single game at 5 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Orange swept its series with Pittsburgh, outscoring the Panthers 28-13. In the opener, freshman Sydney O'Hara tossed a one-hitter and classmate Alyssa Dewes hit the two-run, go-ahead homer in the seventh to lead SU to a 5-2 win. The second game featured nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings as the Orange overame an early deficit to come out on top 11-4. O'Hara went 4-for-4 with the go-ahead homer in the fifth and the duo of sophomore Lindsey Larkin and freshman Christina Clermont combined to throw six innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Syracuse belted out a season-high 18 hits in the finale, one shy of the school record on its way to a 12-7 victory, overcoming an early 3-0 hole again. O'Hara (4-5), along with freshman Nicole Lundstrom (4-6) and junior Mary Dombrowski (3-3) combined to go 11-for-14 with eight RBIs, four doubles and a homer.
O'HARA TABBED ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SECOND TIME:
For the second time this season, freshman Sydney O'Hara was selected the ACC Player of the Week after leading the Orange to a 5-0 record. She is just one of three players in the conferece to be honored the Player of the Week twice and is the only freshman to hold that distinction. In the five games, O'Hara batted .500 (9-18) with seven RBIs, three doubles and a homer. She also got the job done in the circle, going 2-0 with a save, 15 strikeouts, two complete games - one of those being a two-hit shutout while the other a one-hitter.
OFFENSIVE OUTPUT:
Since beginning ACC play, Syracuse has been one of the best teams in the league offensively. In conference-only games, the Orange rank in the top-three in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. The teams' batting average of .338 is just three points behind Notre Dame for the top spot, while the .431 on-base percentage is the best in the league. SU's .554 slugging percentage ranks third in conference games.
SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE:
Boston College (22-17, 6-9 ACC) was just 8-7 before a six-game winning streak pushed the Eagles seven games above .500. The team followed that up by losing eight-of-nine, including sweeps to Florida State and Virginia Tech, but have bounced back to win its last two ACC series and come into the Syracuse series winners in seven of the last nine. Tory Speer is one of two Eagles hitting above .300 and ranks second on the club at .330 along with seven homers and 33 RBIs. Nicole D'Argento has logged the most innings in the circle, compiling a 13-11 record and a 2.69 ERA with 11 CGs.
SCOUTING COLGATE:
Entering its game with Syracuse, Colgate (9-20) is 4-2 in its last six games after having lost nine-of-10. Katie Bushee owns team bests of a .316 batting average and 10 extra base hits while Marisa Dowling has three homers and 20 RBIs to go along with a .295 average. Brigit Ieuter and Megan Carnase share the bluk of the time on the rubber. Ieuter has a club-low ERA of 3.22 and a 5-9 record.
SERIES HISTORY:
SU owns a 9-4 advantage in the all-time series with Boston College, having won the last three meetings. The pair played just last season as non-conference foes for the first time, a 10-0 Orange win that featured a 4-for-4 performance with a homer and six RBIs by sophomore Corinne Ozanne.
Central New York foes Syracuse and Colgate have met just five times, with SU holding a 4-1 edge. Both teams met for doubleheaders in 2001 and 2009 and played most recently in 2012, a 6-0 win for 'Cuse in the first-ever softball gam played inside the Carrier Dome. In the first-ever meeting between the teams, history was also made as Heather Brown struck-out a single-game program record 21 batters in a 1-0, nine-inning win for Syracuse.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Syracuse faces its toughest challenge to date this weekend, a three-game series at nationally-ranked No. 9/8 Florida State.
