SAN DIEGO – The No. 14 Syracuse men's rowing varsity eight completed competition at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday with a sixth-place finish in the Men's Collegiate Invitational grand final.
Coming off a second-place finish in its heat on Saturday, the Orange finished Sunday's grand final in a time of 6:10.00, behind No. 2 Cal's winning time of 5:49.68, Northeastern (5:57.51), Stanford (6:05.26), British Columbia (6:07.81) and George Washington (6:08.10).
Head Coach Dave Reischman's crew consisted of Liz Abraham (cox), Conor Finnegan (stroke), Jake Martens (7), Patrick O'Shaughnessy-Hunter (6), Cameron Bierwith (5), A.J. Abell (4), Mac Zink (3), Aleksandr Staprans (2) and Kyle Rogers (bow).
Approximately 4,400 athletes from more than 125 universities, clubs and high schools from across the United States, as well as the world, participate in this legendary, premier spring regatta. Athletes, ranging in age from 14 to 84 years, compete in more than 100 races in various divisions.
This year, the San Diego Crew Classic celebrates four decades of rowing excellence! From its modest beginnings in 1973, the Crew Classic has matured into one of the largest regattas held primarily for eight-oared rowing shells. Today, it is a two-day, nationally acclaimed regatta for juniors, collegiate, masters and even Olympic-level competitors, set in the picturesque waters, sandy shores and green lawns of Mission Bay Park in San Diego, California. More than 25,000 spectators watch the races both from the shoreline, as well as on the popular Jumbotron on-site.
Syracuse begins the cup race portion of its schedule on Saturday, April 19 when it takes on No. 12 Cornell and No. 9 Navy for the Goes Trophy in Ithaca. The Orange will be looking to snap the Midshipmen's two-year hold on the Goes after SU's last victory in 2011.
