WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 18 Syracuse men's rowing team's varsity eight recorded a second-place finish in the third level final at the 69th EARC Sprints Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday.
Head coach Dave Reischman's Orange had four crews in action at the regatta which featured morning heats and afternoon finals. While Syracuse's V8 placed 14th overall, its second varsity eight was 11th, the third varsity eight finished 12th and the fourth varsity eight was fourth in its event.
Syracuse's varsity eight, seeded fifth of the six crews in its heat, finished fifth in what was a tight race at the front between Harvard (5:35.117), Boston University (5:35.532) and Cornell (5:35.660). Wisconsin (5:42.373) used its sprint to hold off the Orange (5:43.892), who had a large open water margin over sixth-place Rutgers (6:04.365). Despite the fifth-place finish sending the Orange to the third level final, it posted the 11th-fastest time across the three heats.
In the third level final, the Orange and George Washington quickly took control of the race and dueled down the 2,000 meter course before the Colonials pulled out to a five-seat victory in 5:41.712 to SU's second-place time of 5:43.805 in the six boat race.
"I thought we were good in the morning heat, as good as I've seen us," Reischman said. "The tailwind was a little faster than the morning, but nothing we weren't prepared for. We got a little too eager in the start sequence and never got ahold of the boat down the course."
SU's third varsity eight finished fourth in its morning heat, a race controlled by Northeastern with Navy, Dartmouth, Syracuse and Penn tightly grouped for second through fifth-place. In the petite final, the Orange placed fifth, getting edged by Columbia by .1 seconds at the line in a race won by Wisconsin.
SU's third varsity eight finished third in its morning heat, rowing well in a race won by Navy who edged Princeton with Wisconsin coming in fourth. The Orange placed sixth in the petite final, a race won by Yale over Wisconsin and Dartmouth.
Syracuse's fourth varsity eight started the morning by reversing a result from last weekend to qualify for the grand final. After losing to Dartmouth's 4V8 by .6 seconds on May 9, the Orange beat the Big Green by an open water margin of over six seconds for third-place in its heat. The top three of each of the two heats qualified for the grand final.
The Orange 4V8 went on to finish fourth in a very competitive grand final behind crews from Boston University (A and B boats) and Navy, while besting Brown and Cornell.
"The 4V rowed well," Reischman said. "They probably had their best race of the year in the final."
The Orange now awaits IRA National Championship Regatta selections and seedings to be announced on Tuesday.
