Former Syracuse defensive end Dwight Freeney was named to Athlon Sports' Top-50 College Football Players of the BCS Era last week. Freeney ('02), currently in his second season with the San Diego Chargers after his 11-year tenure in Indianapolis, was selected as the 38th-best student-athlete of the era.
A two-time, first team All-BIG EAST performer, Freeney still holds the Syracuse single-season record for the most sacks with 17.5 during his senior season and has the second-most of any Orange with 34.0 in his career. His single-season record was also the best-ever mark for a BIG EAST student-athlete. He went on a streak of 17 consecutive games with at least one quarterback takedown and his senior year performance made him a unanimous All-American. He also finished ninth in Heisman voting.
