Bromley Becomes A New York Giant
5/9/2014 10:30:00 PM | Football
Jay Bromley is the first Orange to be selected in the 2014 NFL Draft and will represent his home state as a New York Giant. Bromley, a Jamaica, N.Y. native, is the fourth Orange on the Giants' active roster, joining former teammates Justin Pugh and Ryan Nassib and NFL veteran Jameel McClain. Bromley was selected Friday night as the 74th overall pick, 10th in the third round.
Bromley is the first defensive tackle to be drafted from Syracuse since Arthur Jones was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in 2010 as the 157th pick overall. He is the highest Syracuse defensive tackle drafted since Ted Gregory in 1988, who was taken 26th overall in the first round by the Denver Broncos.
A 2013 All-ACC selection, Bromley amassed 14.5 tackles for loss including 10 sacks, all solo, which ranked 18th among all FBS players. The team captain was a leader on a defense that ranked 24th in limiting opponents on the ground (137.4 yards per game), 15th in third-down defense (.335, 63-188) and was the only team in the country to prevent an opposing player from rushing for 100 yards.
Bromley was a member of a senior class that won three bowl games in four years, helping restore the Orange's winning tradition. SU defeated an opponent from one of the five major conferences in FBS in each of the three bowl wins, one of just nine schools to accomplish the feat.
He is the third Syracuse player drafted by the Giants in the last two years and will play for head coach Tom Coughlin, also a former SU student-athlete. Coughlin was a running back and lettered at Syracuse from 1965-67. Pugh, the 19th overall pick and Nassib, the 110th overall pick were drafted by New York last year in the 2013 NFL Draft. In addition, discounted group tickets (20+), with prices as low as $10 each, are available for all home games by calling the Ticket Sales office (443-3212).
