Former Orange standouts, Carey-Leigh Thomas and Jenna Caira are enjoying success on the diamond for Team Canada in the Softball World Cup
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Currently sitting atop the standings of the 2014 Softball World Cup is Team Canada with a record of 4-1 and two of Syracuse's finest alums have contributed a great deal in their country's achievements thus far.
Posting a 1.85 earned run average over the course of 11.1 innings with 11 strikeouts in all five games Canada has played is the Orange's own Jenna Caira. The star pitcher has allowed just three runs in the tournament, two of which were allowed in the teams 11-4 win over Japan. Contributing to her teams offensive output was former Orange, Carey-Leigh Thomas who scored a run in the game.
The Orange duo came through for Canada the following day against Chinese Taipei. Caira threw five shutout innings with five strikeouts, however it was Thomas who roped a pitch to left field in the bottom of the seventh to score Larissa Franklin for the walk-off 3-2 victory.
Thomas continued her success at the plate the next day in the double-header against the Philippines and Venezuela. The first game the infielder went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in two of the team's three runs in their 3-1 victory. The second game Canada defeated Venezuela by a score of 8-2 with Thomas knocking in another two runs and crossing the plate once herself.
Caira threw three scoreless innings in the double-header and picked up the win against the Philippines and a save against Venezuela, completing a stretch of eight scoreless innings in three games. Team USA broke the streak last night, tagging Caira for a run in its 5-3 win over Canada, marking its first and only loss in the tournament.
Canada will look to defend the top spot in the standings on Saturday, July 12 at 3:30 PM against Mexico, which currently is 1-2-0 in the tournament to this point.
The United States is right behind Canada at 3-0-0 with two games to play. Japan is in third place with a record of 3-1. Team USA and Japan are set to square off at 9:00 PM tonight.
