Orange NBA product, Carmelo Anthony, elects to remain a New York Knick
On Saturday afternoon former Syracuse All-American Carmelo Anthony announced via his website that he was re-signing with the New York Knicks.
It was no surprise that the seven-time NBA All-Star and three-time Team USA gold medalist had a surplus of suitors, vying for his assistance in claiming a NBA Title. However, after listening to the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, Anthony decided to remain a New York Knick.
"A few years ago I dreamed of coming back to New York City, the place of my birth, and on February 23, 2011 that became a reality," Anthony said in a personal statement he released Sunday morning. "I owed it to myself and my family to explore all of the options available to me. Through it all, my heart never wavered."
In Anthony, the Knicks retain one of the elite scorers in the NBA. In 2013 he was the NBA scoring champion, averaging 28.7 points per game. He was second in the league last season averaging 27.4 points per game.
Anthony had a one-of-a-kind single season at Syracuse, leading the Orange to its first National Championship. He earned consensus All-American honors and was the MVP of the Final Four.
His 778 points and 349 rebounds both broke freshman program records at SU and his 22.2 points per game and 10.0 boards per game earned him National Freshman of the Year by four separate media outlets.
Later in his NBA career 'Melo made another significant contribution to Syracuse Basketball. In 2009 the University constructed a 54,000-square foot, $19-million dollar facility to be named the Carmelo K. Anthony Center. Anthony made the lead gift.
Also referred to as the Melo Center, the state-of-the-art complex holds locker rooms, film rooms, coaches suites, two courts, the Tobin Academic suite, a strength and conditioning facility, an athletic training suite, a hydro-therapy room, pools, men's and women's coaching staff locker room suites, and an equipment room for the men's and women's programs at Syracuse.
