U.S., Canada, Iroquois are top three seeds, Jenkins powers Bermuda
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Several current and former Orange lacrosse stars are turning in stellar performances at this year's Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship in Commerce City, Colo. Past and present Syracuse standouts are representing the U.S., Canada, the Iroquois Nationals and Bermuda and have been integral to the success of their nations.
Here's an overview of the individuals with Orange ties participating and their impact:
Matt Abbott (M) – United States
Abbott is one of America's top short sticks. He's part of a U.S. defense that has given up 23 goals in five games (4.6 per game), the fewest in the Blue Division. Abbott has played in every game. He has three assists and nine ground balls so far in the tournament. He's also been a reliable wing player for a U.S. squad that has dominated faceoffs.
Brett Bucktooth (A) – Iroquois
Bucktooth has come off the bench in all five Iroquois games. He has three goals, scoring once versus England, Japan and Australia.
Gary Gait (Assistant Coach) - Canada
The Canadians went 4-1 in pool play to finish second in the Blue Division and earn a berth in the semifinals. Team Canada's only loss was a 10-7 decision against the United States on opening night. Canada has scored 71 goals (14.2 per game), the second-most in the Blue Division behind the U.S.
Cody Jamieson (A) – Iroquois
Jamieson started every game in pool play. He has four goals and eight assists for a total of 12 points. Against Japan, Jamieson notched three goals and four assists in a 24-9 Iroquois rout.
Drew Jenkins (M) – Bermuda
Jenkins has been Bermuda's best player. In five games, he has 11 goals, three assists, 60 ground balls and has won 67.2 percent (78-116) of his faceoffs. Against Uganda, Jenkins netted three goals, picked up 16 ground balls and won 20-of-23 draws. He had a game-best 18 ground balls in a 15-11 loss yesterday to Hong Kong.
Sid Smith (D) – Iroquois
Smith has started every game on defense. He has six ground balls and two caused turnovers in the tournament, including three ground balls in a 9-8 loss to Canada.
Randy Staats (A/M) – Iroquois
Staats tallied six goals and six assists in pool play. He started the Iroquois first four games, two on attack and two in the midfield, before coming off the bench yesterday against the United States. Staats has three two-goal games and put up eight points (2 goals, 6 assists) versus Japan.
Jeremy Thompson (M) – Iroquois
Thompson has started all five games in the midfield and has five goals and one assist. In the opening game against England, he contributed two goals and one assist. Thompson also scored twice versus Australia. In addition, he is 19-for-48 (.396) on faceoffs in the tournament.
SCHEDULE
The U.S. (5-0) won the Blue Division crown to earn a berth in Thursday's semifinals against the winner of today's Australia-Israel match. Canada (4-1) finished second in the Blue Division and also will play in the semifinals on Thursday against the winner of today's quarterfinal game between the Iroquois (3-2) and Scotland.
Bermuda finished second in the Yellow Division and is 2-3 overall. The island nation is in the first consolation bracket and can finish no higher than 21st. Bermuda plays the loser of Latvia-Hong Kong tomorrow.
