Orange alum leads Rochester into MLL playoffs for the first time since '08
BOSTON – Former Syracuse men's lacrosse superstar and current Rochester Rattler John Galloway was named the 2014 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Warrior Goalkeeper of the Year on Friday, Aug. 15. Galloway received 11 first-place votes and 63 points in a poll of MLL coaches and general managers to beat out Denver's Jesse Schwartzman (2 first-place votes, 35 points) and New York's Drew Adams (2 first-place votes, 20 points) for the award.
"This is definitely an unexpected honor considering all the excellent goalies we compete against every week," Galloway said in a release announcing the honor. "Individual accolades are great, but it's been a team effort and it's all about getting Rochester back in the playoffs."
A four-year pro, Galloway has started all 14 games this season for the Rattlers, backstopping Rochester to the regular-season title and its first playoff berth since 2008. He leads the MLL in saves (194) and goals-against average (11.16), both of which are personal bests.
At Syracuse, Galloway earned two first-team All-America nods and won two national championships (2008, 2009). A two-time winner of the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award as the nation's top goalie, Galloway set the NCAA records for minutes played (3,776) and most wins (59) by a goaltender during his Orange career.
Galloway and the Rattlers are the top seed in the MLL playoffs and will take on fourth-seeded Ohio in the semifinals at 3 p.m. in Wegmans Stadium in Rochester on Saturday, Aug. 16. The winner advances to the MLL championship game the following weekend against either Denver or New York.
