‘Cuse suffers losses to Xavier and Ohio to wrap-up road trip
Xavier and Ohio defeated the Orange on the final day of the Millennium Hotel Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The trip to Ohio marks the team's final road trip of its non-conference slate.
Lindsay McCabe was honored on the all-tournament team for her weekend performances. The redshirt senior middle blocker finished the weekend with 15 kills and 15 blocks.
Syracuse vs. Xavier Blow-By-Blow
The host, Xavier, handed Syracuse its first 3-0 loss of the season to begin the day. With the scoreboard at 22-17, the set appeared out of reach for the Orange. However, a quick 4-1 burst powered by kills from Monika Salkute and Lucie Guttakovskaia and two attack errors by Xavier pulled the Orange within two.
The Musketeers retaliated with a kill to put them within match point but Gosia Wlaszczuk picked up a kill and an ace to bring the score to threaten Xavier with a 24-23 score. Xavier then won the set on a service error on the following play to make the score 25-23.
SU's opponent didn't waste any time in the second and put together a 7-0 run to post a 9-2 lead. Syracuse battled back to pull within three but couldn't keep the game close as the Musketeers then surged on an 8-3 run to close out the second set with a 25-16 score. Syracuse then failed to get anything going in the third as it fell 25-12.
SU Stat Pack vs. Xavier
Wlaszczuk, Valeriya Shaipova, Leah Levert and Stacey Smith were all effective on the attack for SU as Levert and Smith led the team, each hitting .667 and combining for six kills on nine attempts. Shaipova was three-for-six and hit .500 while Wlaszczuk racked up the second most kills for 'Cuse with five on 12 tries, hitting .333 in the game. The setter also picked up 16 assists. Silvi Uattara led the squad once again with six kills.
McCabe led Syracuse in blocks picking up three block assists. Lucie Guttakovskaia, Shaipova and Levert all had two. Altogether, the Orange's 10 blocks outmatched Xavier's 2.5. Melina Violas picked up 11 digs while Salkute and Dana Crispi had six and five of their own respectively.
A Look Inside The Loss To Ohio
To begin the Ohio game, the Wildcats escaped the Orange in the first set in a back-and-forth set ending 25-22 in favor of Ohio. The second began much similar as Syracuse fought to pull within one of Ohio to begin the set 15-14 in favor of the Bobcats. However, Ohio wasn't going to stick around and go through another nail biter as it threw together a 10-1 run to finish off the Orange by a score of 25-15.
In the third Syracuse was down 3-6 but then thrived on an 11-0 burst powered by three kills by Salkute, two by Smith, an ace by Uattara and a handful of errors by the Bobcats. 'Cuse and Ohio exchanged blows until SU ultimately won the set by a score of 25-16. SU's success was short lived as it dropped the fourth set 25-13.

Uattara led SU with 11 kills in the game and was followed by Smith with seven. Behind Smith with six each was Wlaszczuk and Salkute. Wlaszczuk recorded 23 assists as well.
McCabe denied the Bobcats six times on assisted blocks. Uattara had four assisted blocks while Levert and Salkute were in on three blocks each. The team out-blocked Ohio, 12.5-to-7. Salkute and Uattara also led the way in digs with 14 and 13 respectively. Violas was the other Orange with double-digit digs with 10. Wlaszczuk racked up nine digs as freshman defensive specialist, Belle Sand picked up seven of her own.

Next weekend the Orange hosts the final weekend of non-conference play. Syracuse welcomes Albany on Saturday, September 20 at 5:00 PM and Colgate and Cornell on Sunday, September 21 at 12:30 PM and 6:30 PM.
