
Make That Four Straight, Volleyball Takes Windy City Invite

The Orange swept the tournament and has now won four straight contests

Syracuse leaves the Windy City Invite unscathed as the Orange defeated Illinois-Chicago and Chicago State on Saturday following its victory over DePaul on Friday. Silvi Uattara and Monika Salkute were honored as All-Tournament performers for their contributions to the team's success.
To begin the day, the Orange battled with Illinois-Chicago in a back-and-forth matchup with Syracuse ultimately getting the better of the Flames, 3-1. Uattara recorded 28 kills in the match alongside Salkute who had 13 of her own. Supporting the Orange attack, Gosia Wlaszczuk recorded 39 assists and was efficient with her attack as she put away six kills on 10 attempts.
Dominating the net, the Orange denied the flames 19 times. Leading the way was freshman, Leah Levert who picked up 11 blocks, 10 of which were assisted. Uattara and McCabe each had eight block assists and Wlaszczuk denied four. McCabe also recorded eight kills to go along with her eight blocks.
Salkute, Uattara and McCabe led the attack in the first set for 'Cuse with four kills each and a combined three block assists. The setters, Wlaszczuk and Guttakovskaia also contributed with three kills of their own and a block assist from Guttakovskaia.
The first stanza ultimately ended by a 28-26 score in favor of the Orange, however, it did not come easy. On the verge of losing the set, Uattara tied the game at 25 on a kill assisted by Wlaszczuk. Coach Yelin then made key substitutions bringing in McCabe and Guttakovskaia. The next play the duo blocked Kara Johnson giving Syracuse the 26-25 lead.
The lead was short lived as the Flames tied the set on the ensuing play. Coach Yelin made another key substitution by bringing in Wlaszczuk who then regained the lead for the Orange with an unassisted kill bringing the score to 27-26. 'Cuse then won the set on an attack error by the Flames.
Showing fight once again, Illinois-Chicago and Syracuse traded blows as the score was tied 17 times in the second set. The Orange survived set-point for Illinois-Chicago six times. With the score tied at 32, Uattara was assisted by Levert on a kill to give Syracuse the lead.
Illinois-Chicago responded with a rebuttal following a SU timeout to tie the game at 33, but it was the size of the Orange that came through to win the second set. Syracuse denied the Flames on the next two plays, one was blocked by McCabe and Uttara, and the finishing blow came at the hands of McCabe and Wlaszczuk.
The Flames won the next set only to fall in the fourth, giving Syracuse the 3-1 victory.
Even after the long back-and-forth match with Illinois-Chicago, the Orange came into its night game focused and recovered. 'Cuse made quick work of Chicago State, defeating the Cougars in three sets and not allowing more than 16 points in a single stanza. Uattara once again led the attack with 12 kills and Salkute had nine. McCabe and Stacey Smith each had four of kills to add with Levert recording three.
Splitting time at setter, Wlaszczuk had 14 assists while Guttakovskaia supported 13 kills. McCabe rejected the Cougars on eight attempts while Smith assisted on five blocks as well.
Next week, the Orange takes its four-game winning streak to Ohio, where Coach Yelin and his team will take on Ohio State, Xavier and Ohio.
