Orange outshoot Cardinals 28-4

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 5 Orange field hockey team rolled to a 5-0 victory over Ball State (3-1) behind a 28-4 shots advantage on Sunday.

Kati Nearhouse and Lauren Brooks each tallied two goals and Lieke Visser had three assists and a goal for 'Cuse (6-0) and Jess Jecko stopped all three shots she saw in the team's second shutout of the season.

"We had better composure today in our attack," said head coach Ange Bradley. "We could go play our Syracuse style of hockey. I think we were more patient and poised than we were yesterday. We were really frantic yesterday and forced a lot of things."

Nearhouse got the scoring started in the 19th minute by jamming home a rebound right in front of the net and Brooks found the back of the net from just inside the circle in the 34th minute on a feed from Visser to give the Orange a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Orange scored again on another Brooks goal from Visser in the 48th minute to open the second-half scoring. This time, Brooks scored from right in front, with Visser's pass finding her at the far post from the play.

Visser got in the scoring column on her own five minutes later. She inserted a corner and stopper Jordan Page sent a pass right back to a wide-open Visser after drawing the defense out of the cage.

Nearhouse rounded out the Orange scoring by firing another shot from just inside the circle. Visser took the ball down to the end line and quickly passed it to Nearhouse as she stepped inside the circle. She fired the shot high and past a sprawling Shelby Henley.

Syracuse will now head back on the road to face No. 2 North Carolina in the Orange's first battle with a ranked opponent this season.

GAME NOTES: The 6-0 start ties the third best start under eighth year head coach Ange Bradley … Visser has nine assists through six games. The Orange haven't had someone with more than 13 assists for an entire season since 2009.
