"Hoops For The Stars" Program Continues At Syracuse
1/29/2015 10:22:00 AM | Men's Basketball
The 'Hoops for the Stars' program will be highlighted with an on-court presentation to honor more than 150 area youth at the Syracuse men's basketball games against Duke (Feb. 14), and Virginia (March 2), at the Dome. A presentation was also made at the game with Miami on January 24.
On hand at the presentation at the Syracuse vs. Miami game were Melanie Littlejohn, a board member with the National Grid Foundation, students from Expeditinary Learning Middle School, and school principal Kevin Burns.
For the seventh year in a row, Syracuse University and the National Grid Foundation have partnered to implement the program to provide positive reinforcement, recognition of improved academic performance and attendance in school, a decrease in negative behavior, and positive contributions to the community. The program underscores a shared commitment by Syracuse University Athletics and the National Grid Foundation to create opportunities for solutions to educational issues within the Syracuse City School District.
"Pursuing excellence is what this program is all about, and we are proud and honored to be able to reward this pursuit", said SU Athletics Director Dr. Daryl Gross. "Hoops for the Stars not only teaches great work and study habits, but also provides an exposure to marquee events that are all about excellence, and brings young people onto a college campus. Dreams come from programs like this and we are grateful to work with the National Grid Foundation on this amazing concept yet again."
Through the National Grid Foundation's commitment of $35,000, Syracuse University Athletics is providing tickets to 12 men's basketball home games. Ticket recipients include 2,300 student achievers from the Syracuse City School District's eight middle schools and a parent or guardian to select Orange men's games.
"Through programs like 'Hoops for the Stars,' the National Grid Foundation continues to promote academic achievement and encourage youth to reach for the stars," said Melanie Littlejohn, Board Member, National Grid Foundation. "The National Grid Foundation and Syracuse University celebrate a seventh year of the program and pleased to work together to positively impact the lives of students today and future generations."
