Jones and a pair of Patriots coaches have 'Cuse ties
Three former Orange will be on the field for the Super Bowl on Sunday, highlighted by Patriots star defensive end Chandler Jones.
Jones, who is in his third season in the league, is joined by Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, who served as a graduate assistant at 'Cuse from 2001-03 and running backs coach Ivan Fears who coached wide receivers at Syracuse from 1980-90.
The Endicott, N.Y. native missed time due to injury this season but still managed to record 43 tackles and six sacks in just 11 regular season games. He also blocked a field goal and returned it for a touchdown against the Vikings in week two.
One of 14 former Orange to suit up for an NFL team this season, Jones is seeking his first Super Bowl ring and would be the most recent former Orange since his brother Arthur – who now plays for the Colts –won the title with the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII.
In addition to the Jones brothers, Syracuse football alums Ryan Nassib (Giants), Justin Pugh (Giants), Jay Bromley (Giants), Jameel McClain (Giants), Dwight Freeney (Chargers), Tony Fiammetta (Bears), Jerome Smith (Falcons), Marquis Spruill (Falcons), Andrew Tiller (Packers/Saints), Ri'Shard Anderson (Titans), Alec Lemon (Texans/Ravens) and Shamarko Thomas (Steelers) all were on NFL rosters this season.
In addition, defensive back Steve Gregory retired from the NFL before the start of the regular season after spending training camp with Kansas City Chiefs. It was Gregory's eight year in the league, having played in 97 games for the Chargers and Patriots in his career.
Jones is the 38th former member Orange player to compete in the Super Bowl.
