WHITE SULFER SPRINGS W.Va. – Seven-time Pro Bowler Dwight Freeney is back in the National Football League. Freeney, who holds multiple Syracuse sack records, signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, the team announced on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The deal is reportedly worth $970,000 plus incentives.
The 35-year-old outside linebacker is starting his 14th NFL season. Freeney played the last two years for the San Diego Chargers before being cut in the spring.
Prior to joining the Chargers, Freeney spent 11 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and built a reputation as one of the most feared pass rushers in the league. He ranks 21st in NFL history with 111.5 career sacks and posted double-digit sack totals in seven of his first nine seasons. Freeney appeared in two Super Bowls with the Colts and helped the franchise to a 29-17 victory over Chicago in Super Bowl XLI.
At Syracuse, Freeney was nearly unstoppable. He racked up 34 career sacks from 1998-2001 and set the Orange single-game record, sacking Virginia Tech's Michael Vick 4.5 times in 2000. As a senior in 2001, Freeney led the nation and set the Orange single-season record with 17.5 sacks. He also led the country in forced fumbles (11) and was a finalist for the Lombardi, Nagurski and Bednarik Awards.
The 2015 Orange resumes Atlantic Coast Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Virginia. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Scott Stadium. The game will air live on RSN.
Syracuse returns to the Carrier Dome for its next home game on Saturday, Oct. 24 against Pittsburgh during Orange Central/Homecoming Weekend. Tickets for the game, which is sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts, start at $30 and are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20 or more) for all home games can be purchased by calling 315-443-3212.
