SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Cameron MacPherson of the football team and Julie Bengis of the women's rowing team are this week's Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week. The pair were two of 35 students chosen as Remembrance Scholars for the 2015-16 academic year, and will be honored next week during Remembrance Week (Oct. 25-31). The Remembrance Scholarship is one of the highest awards a Syracuse University student can receive.
Each year, Syracuse University awards 35 Remembrance Scholarships to students based on academic achievement, citizenship, and service to the community. The scholarships were founded as a tribute to the 35 students who perished in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988.
Bengis is a senior sport management major with a minor in marketing. The Stormville, N.Y. native rowed in the fourth seat of the third varsity eight that beat three of the top 20 ranked crews in the country at the Clemson invite this past season. She has held a spot on the third varsity eight crew since her freshman year. In her rookie campaign, she helped the third varsity eight boat to a second-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships. Bengis has been a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll ever since her first semester on campus in the fall of 2012.
MacPherson is a dual major in international relations and television, radio, and film. The Syracuse native has seen action in every game so far this season after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. He has been a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester while at Syracuse, and was also named to the 2014 ACC Honor Roll. The tight end is the younger brother of Macky MacPherson, a four-year letterwinner and the 2013 team captain at Syracuse. He is also the grandson of Dick MacPherson, the head coach of the Orange football program from 1981-90.
The women's rowing squad heads to West Windsor, N.J. next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31, at the Collegiate Small Boats Challenge.
MacPherson and the football team return home after two weekends on the road, taking on Pittsburgh this Saturday, Oct. 24 at 12 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Tickets are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20 or more) for all home games can be purchased by calling 315-443-3212.
