SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's basketball team passed its first test of the 2015-16 season, defeating local rival Le Moyne 97-58 in an exhibition matchup on Monday in the Carrier Dome.
Leading by 10 points at the half, the Orange burst onto the scene to kick off the second half, scoring 21-unanswered points and upping its margin to 65-34. The offensive outburst from the Orange set the tone for the rest of the night and Syracuse ultimately outscored Le Moyne, 50-24, in the second half.
The Orange committed just nine turnovers in the 40 minutes of play, while the Syracuse defense caused 21 turnovers for Le Moyne.
Senior Michael Gbinije paced the Orange offense on the night, netting five 3-pointers and finishing with a game-high 21 points. Freshman Malachi Richardson also turned in a strong performance in his Syracuse debut, racking up seven rebounds and 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
Senior DaJuan Coleman also proved to be solid in his return from injury, taylling 15 points and seven rebounds, with four of those rebounds coming on the offensive side of the boards. Coleman, who missed the last year-and-a-half, scored 13 of his 15 points after the intermission and finished 7-of-9 from the field.
Junior Tyler Roberson led the way on the glass, hauling in a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Syracuse bench came up big in the win, combing for 32 points. Sophomore guard Kaleb Joseph led the reserves with 11 points.
Syracuse led for all but 30 seconds in the first half, primarily powered by Gbinije and his success at the 3-point line. The forward knocked down three 3's in the first seven minutes of play and went 4-of-7 from the 3-point line in the first 20 minutes of the contest, with all of his points in the first half stemming from beyond the arc. Richardson and freshman Franklin Howard also got in on the 3-point action, as the Orange collectively knocked-down eight 3's in the first half.
The Syracuse defense proved to be a huge factor in the game as well, as 15 steals from the Orange translated to 36 points off of turnovers.
The Orange are back in action at the Carrier Dome next Sunday, Nov. 8, taking on Florida Southern in its final exhibition game of the season. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
