Orange reserves contribute at NC State
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange had several players take advantage of the increased reps they saw in yesterday's game at NC State. Seniors Rony Charles, Oliver Vigille and junior Ben Lewis in particular aren't necessarily household names, but all three made an impact against the Wolfpack.
Â
Charles, a walk-on defensive lineman, and Vigille, a converted linebacker, have seen more time at defensive end in recent weeks due to injuries and other circumstances. Playing in just his third game, Charles totaled a career-best four tackles, including 2.0 for a loss, and his first career sack.
Â
With the score 28-16 in the third quarter, Charles came free on second-and-10 from the NC State 16-yard line and brought down Wolfpack quarterback Jacoby Brissett for a 10-yard loss. The sack helped force one of NC State's three second-half three-and-outs.
Â
Vigille, who has played mainly on special teams throughout his career, picked up a Jalan McClendon fumble and ran it back 29 yards for his first career touchdown with 5:50 to play in the contest. It was the Orange's fourth defensive touchdown of the season and second fumble return for a score.
Â
Lewis is the player most familiar to Orange fans. He is fourth on the team in receptions (18), but has shifted from hybrid back to tight end recently to fill the void left by injuries to Josh Parris and Kendall Moore. Lewis recorded a career-high 62 yards receiving on three catches against the Wolfpack before leaving the game with an injury own his own. His 37-yard reception on SU's opening drive led to an 18-yard field goal by Cole Murphy.
Â
Syracuse has one game left in its 2015 campaign. The Orange returns home to the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Nov. 28 to take on Boston College. It will be the final game for Charles, Vigille and the rest of the Syracuse seniors.
Tickets are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20 or more) can be purchased by calling 315-443-3212.
