Patriots defensive end is tied for the NFL lead in forced fumbles
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Syracuse University football star Chandler Jones was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his four-year NFL career on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
Jones has 43 tackles, including 12.5 sacks, and is tied for the NFL lead with four forced fumbles for the 12-2 New England Patriots who have already clinched a playoff berth by virtue of winning the AFC East title.
Jones is the first Orange football alum to be elected to the Pro Bowl since Dwight Freeney in 2012, and joins Ezekiel Ansah (Detroit Lions), Michael Bennett (Seattle Seahawks), Khalil Mack (Oakland Raiders), J.J. Watt (Houston Texans) and Muhammad Wilkerson (New York Jets) as defensive ends in this year's Pro Bowl player pool.
A native of Endicott, N.Y., Jones starred for the Orange from 2009-11. He totaled 147 tackles, including 27.0 for a loss, and was a two-time, All-BIG EAST selection. Jones was drafted in the first round (21st overall) by the Patriots in the 2012 NFL Draft.
The 86 Pro Bowl players announced Tuesday were elected by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group's vote counted one-third toward determining the selections.
Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin will serve as this year's Pro Bowl team captains. They will draft their teams on Jan. 27.
The 2016 Pro Bowl will be held on Jan. 31 in Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.
