NCAA INFRACTIONS APPEALS COMMITTEE RELEASES DECISION
The NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee issued its decision earlier this week in response to head coach Jim Boeheim's appeal of sanctions imposed on him last March. Coach Boeheim will begin his nine-game suspension immediately and associate head coach Mike Hopkins will lead the team during his absence.
THE RIVALRY
Syracuse and Georgetown were both part of the original seven members of The BIG EAST conference along with Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College. The squads have had many memorable meetings over the years, including the final game in Manley Field House prior to the opening of the Carrier Dome. The schools have met 90 times in their history with the Orange leading the series, 49-41.
THE RENEWAL
Saturday will be the first meeting between the Orange and its rival since March of 2013 when Syracuse pulled out an overtime victory over the Hoyas in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. The only members still on the roster from that victory are graduate student Trevor Cooney and senior DaJuan Coleman. Cooney tallied 10 points in the game. Saturday's contest is the first of a four-game series between the two teams. The series will continue for the next three seasons with games in the Carrier Dome in 2016-17 and 2018-19 and another contest at the Verizon Center in 2017-18.
ROAD WARRIORS
Syracuse is in a stretch where it will play five out of seven games away from the Carrier Dome. The Orange won all three games in the Bahamas on its way to the Battle 4 Atlantis title. Following Saturday's game at Georgetown, Syracuse will host Colgate before going back on the road next Saturday to face St. John's.
GBINIJE AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS
Graduate student Michael Gbinije ranks fourth in the ACC in scoring, averaging 19.6 points per game. He has reached double figures in scoring in all seven games this season. In addition, Gbinije leads the league in steals (3.14 spg.) and three-point field goals made (3.43).
