Hehir wins 5k, Malone takes 2nd, 19 members of the Orange to compete for titles on Saturday
Another ACC Championships, another title for junior Martin Hehir.
Hehir followed up his ACC Cross Country Championship with a seven-second victory in the 5k at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. He completed the event in an ACC-Championship record time of 13:57.97, breaking an eight-year record of 14:00.96 from 2007.
In addition to Hehir's title, 19 different members of the Orange will be racing for ACC titles of their own on Saturday, with another 'Cuse runner already finding her way to the podium on Friday.
Margo Malone took silver in the women's 5k with a time of 16:14.96 to become the first member of the Orange to find the podium at this year's championship. Jessie Petersen finished 10th in the event, just outside of the scoring with a time of 16:40.09.
Syracuse also saw strong performances out of the men's jumpers in Friday's finals, with Jabari Butler taking fifth in the high jump (2.05 meters) and Reggie Morton finishing seventh in the long jump (7.26 meters).
The remainder of the events on Friday were qualifying for Saturday's finals, and a number of Syracuse performers are in strong position to do well on Saturday after Friday's results.
Shaina Harrison was the top-qualifier in the 60-meter dash, posting a personal-best time of 7.35 in the process.
Donald Pollitt was also one of the top-qualifiers in his event, taking the second spot in the 60-meter hurdle prelims, just three-hundreths of a second off top-qualifier Christian Cook of Miami. Pollitt completed his race in 7.85 seconds. Freshman David Gilstrap also made his way into the finals, posting a time of 8.05 seconds in the event.
Rebecca Robinson qualified in fifth in the 400-meter dash, narrowly missing her school-record time that she set earlier this month, with a time of 54.32.
Colin Bennie also qualified in fifth in the mile, racing to a time of 4:06.06. Joel Hubbard will join Bennie in the finals by way of winning his heat (4:09.46).
Sofia Mossberg qualified in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.45 seconds, which was good for sixth.
That group, plus members of the Orange distance and jumping groups who didn't have preliminary races to get through, will see their way onto Saturday's final day of the ACC Championships beginning at noon.
