Syracuse University football and Tops Markets are working together to 'Sack Hunger'. Orange head coach Scott Shafer and Tops representatives Kathleen Allen and Andrew Brocato presented a donation to the Food Bank of Central New York on at the Nottingham Road Tops Market. The $2,700 donation is a result of Syracuse's 27 sacks in 2014.
"One of the creeds of our program is to quietly serve the community," Coach Shafer said. "For us to be an extremely small part of cause such as this is such a special thing for our players and our teammates."
Â
This Syracuse University and Tops Markets partnership to aid the local community started in 2006 with the 'Touchdown for Turkeys' promotion and has benefitted the Food Bank of Central New York and the Ronald McDonald House.
"This year, we wanted to bring more awareness to the Food Bank of Central New York," Allen said. "Tops Sacks Hunger was developed to help ensure that message. For every home and away game during the regular season, we donated $100 for every sack the team recorded."
Â
Food Bank of Central New York is a nonprofit organization working to eliminate hunger through nutritious food distribution, education and advocacy in cooperation with the community. The food bank provides more than 23,000 meals per day through 476 member programs in 11 counties in Central and Northern New York.
"This $2,700 is going to turn into 9,400 meals back into the community," Food Pantry of Central New York Executive Director Kathleen Stress said. "So what we are able to do with our bulk buying power is take that money and turn it into truck-loads of food, and then turn it into meals to distribute out to our programs, and those are food pantries, soup kitchens and emergency shelters throughout our local community."
Â
The Nottingham Road Tops Markets features a Syracuse University Athletics theme, making it the only grocery store in the northeast with university-themed décor throughout the store. The store includes a Syracuse Athletics-themed Cuse Café, life sized wall photos of past and present Syracuse University athletes, orange shopping carts, and a basketball court with Syracuse logos and court markings in the frozen foods aisles.
Â
Tickets for the 2015 season are available online, by phone (888-DOMETIX), at Destiny USA kiosks and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20+), with prices as low as $10 each, are available for all home games by calling the Ticket Sales office (443-3212).
