Two of 35 students selected for scholarships
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Julie Bengis of the women's rowing program and junior Cameron MacPherson of the football team were two of 35 students chosen as Remembrance Scholars for the 2015-16 academic year. The Remembrance Scholarship is one of the highest awards a Syracuse University student can receive.
Â
Each year, Syracuse University awards 35 Remembrance Scholarships to students based on academic achievement, citizenship, and service to the community. The scholarships were founded as a tribute to the 35 students who perished in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988.
Â
Bengis has been a member of the Syracuse women's rowing team since arriving on campus in 2012. The Stormville, N.Y. native has held a spot on the third varsity eight crew since her freshman year. In her freshman campaign, she helped the third varsity eight boat to a second-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships. Bengis, a sport management major, has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll four times during her collegiate career.
Â
MacPherson, a Syracuse native, sat out the 2014 season due to transfer rules, but has been a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester while at Syracuse. A tight end, who played quarterback at Georgetown before transferring to Syracuse after the 2013 season, MacPherson is a dual major in history and television, radio, and film. MacPherson is the younger brother of Macky MacPherson, who was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange and a team captain in 2013.
