26 scouts on hand to watch the Orange
Twenty six NFL scouts representing 25 NFL organizations were on hand at the Ensley Athletic Center on Tuesday for the annual Syracuse Pro Day, where 18 student-athletes showcased their talents.
Former members of the Orange had their bench press repetitions tested at 225-pounds, vertical leap and broad jump distances measured and were timed in the 40-yard dash and numerous other drills before eventually performing in position-based drills for the scouts in attendance.
"Overall it was a very good day," said Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Performance Will Hicks. "I'm very pleased. I'm very proud of the way our kids represented the school and the program. All the scouts were very complimentary of how our guys did in the drills. They finished the drills hard and you can tell that they've been well-coached by our staff in the football part of it and I was very pleased."
Hicks thought a number of players stood out on the afternoon in various areas.
Â
"Jarrod West had a very, very good day, which we thought he was going to. Durell Eskridge improved on most things he did at the combine, which was good," Hicks said. "Sean Hickey had a good day, he went up three reps in the bench, so now he's the top performer in that because the best at the combine was 37.
Â
"Brandon Reddish had a very good day in position work with the DBs. Our defensive backs and linebackers got together with the defensive backs coach who was here and he looked very fluid and caught the ball well. Darius Kelly timed well and looked good in the drills. Dyshawn Davis and Cameron Lynch did very well in those drills as well as linebackers."
Â
Former Orange standout and current New York Giants quarterback Ryan Nassib came back to throw to the wide receivers and running backs during pro day, as well. Underclassmen are not allowed to participate in pro days and the Orange did not have a senior quarterback on its roster this season, so Nassib stepped in for his former squad.
"Jarrod West and Prince-Tyson Gulley caught the ball extremely well because they had an NFL quarterback throwing to them," Hicks said. "Ryan came back because he and Jarrod were roommates in their time here and Ryan came back because he wanted to help out."
