Orange star collects another postseason honor
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Orange attackman Kevin Rice was named to the Senior CLASS Award All-America First Team on Friday, May 22. Rice was one of 10 senior lacrosse players from around the country to be chosen as finalists for the Senior CLASS Award, and the All-America teams were selected based on the voting results of the finalists.
Â
Cornell midfielder Connor Buczek was selected as the award winner by a nationwide panel of coaches, media, and fans.
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Â
The award was conceived by sportscaster Dick Enberg as an honor for seniors in response to the growing trend of men's basketball players leaving school early for the NBA. It has since been expanded to include several sports, one of which is men's lacrosse.
Â
Rice won the Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award as the nation's premier attackman after leading Syracuse in points (84) and assists (48) for the second year in a row. He ranks third nationally in assists per game (3.0) and fourth in points per contest (5.25). Rice had nine games of at least five points in 2015 and set a career high with nine points (4 goals, 5 assists) in SU's first-round NCAA Tournament win against Marist.
Off the field, Rice is a three-time Capital One Academic All-District selection and he was named to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll (min. 3.0 GPA) every semester he was on campus. Rice graduated with a bachelor's degree in history and plans to attend law school at Wake Forest in the fall.
