NCAA Championships Preview: Men's 10,000-Meters
6/4/2015 1:18:00 PM | Track and Field
Martin Hehir, Dan Lennon and Max Straneva lead the Orange into Eugene
The deepest field for the Orange at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships comes in the men's 10,000-meters.
Syracuse has three of the 24 participants in the event – which ties for the third most student-athletes from any institution in any event at the Championships.
Martin Hehir leads the pack for the Orange, the decorated senior who has already earned All-America status in cross country and indoor track this year is the team's top-qualifier, posting the 13th-fastest preliminary time (29:53.89).
However, Hehir still owns the nation's top-time in the event this season from when he ran a 28:27.70 at the Stanford Invitational in April.
He's joined by teammates Dan Lennon (the ACC runner up in the 10k, and holder of the nation's third-fastest time this season from the Stanford Invitational), who qualified in 23rd (30:09.95) and Max Straneva, ACC Cross Country silver medalist, who qualified in 20th (30:08.10).
The qualifying numbers are skewed to the NCAA West Preliminary race, which was taken out at a much faster pace and won by defending National Champion Edward Cheserek, who finished in 29:43.89, earning the top-seed time. The west was responsible for 10 of the top-12 seed times due to a faster paced race.
Only Oregon's four participants in the 5,000-meters is the only group of runners in any event at the meet that's larger than the Syracuse contingent in the men's 10k.
The 'Cuse trio will get their race underway on Wednesday at 9:43 p.m. on ESPNU.
