Comfort Tyler Park, located on the corner of Comstock Ave. and Colvin Street across from Manley Field House, held a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 5. The event signified the completion of a renovation project funded in part by the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation Courts4Kids program.
In addition to Jim Boeheim, Syracuse mayor Stephanie Miner and Onondaga County Executive Joanne M. Mahoney were on hand. Family members of the Farone & Sons Funeral Home, the sponsor of the new basketball court, were there as well.Â
Courts4Kids provides funding for the renovations of outdoor community basketball courts. It offers children in socioeconomically disadvantaged sections of the Syracuse and the surrounding area the opportunity to participate in healthy living activities and improved play areas. The success of this program is due to the partnership between the City of Syracuse Parks Department, Onondaga County's Save the Rain program
and many community sponsors.
"The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation recognize the value that athletics have on the lives of young people," said Mayor Minor. "Through their collaboration with our Department of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Programs, we have the opportunity to help instill the lifelong values of teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness in the youth of our community. I am pleased we have again had the chance to work with the Coach on bringing this successful program into the City of Syracuse."Â
The renovated basketball courts are part of extensive improvements completed at Comfort-Tyler Park in association with Onondaga County's Save the Rain program. Save the Rain is a comprehensive approach to storm water management that reduces pollution to Onondaga Lake and its tributaries by preventing overflow events to the local sewer system. Since 2009, the Onondaga County Save the Rain program has been recognized as a national leader in the development of green infrastructure solutions, receiving several national awards and honors. The basketball courts at Comfort-Tyler were constructed utilizing porous asphalt that will absorb storm water where it lands. This innovative approach will help prevent harmful pollutants from discharging directly to local streams while dramatically improving the water quality in Onondaga Lake. The Comfort-Tyler renovation is the fourth park in the City of Syracuse with a basketball court converted to porous pavement by Save the Rain in partnership with The Boeheim Foundation's Courts4Kids. Previous projects include renovations at Skiddy, Leavenworth/Barker and Lewis Parks.Â
In addition to the courts, green infrastructure improvements at the park include rain garden, bio-swale, and construction of an infiltration trench system. In total, the green infrastructure improvements will capture approximately 982,000 gallons annually.
