WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Orange sophomore Cole Murphy was one of 30 placekickers named to the 2015 Lou Groza Award Preseason Watch List, released on Thursday, July 9 by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission. The trophy is named after Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker Lou Groza and is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding kicker.
Â
A 2014 Groza Award semifinalist, Murphy hit 13-of-16 field goals during his freshman campaign, including career-long, 50-yarders against NC State and Clemson in back-to-back weeks. Murphy led Syracuse in scoring with 50 points last season, including a string of four consecutive multiple field goal games.
Â
The Atlantic Coast Conference leads the nation with six kickers on this year's watch list. In addition to Murphy, Roberto Aguayo (Florida State), Ian Frye (Virginia), Ammon Lakip (Clemson), Ross Martin (Duke) and John Wallace (Louisville) are potential candidates for the award.
Â
Kickers on the Groza Award Watch List were chosen based on statistics from the 2014 season and 2015 expectations. Semifinalists for the award will be announced Nov. 5 and the three finalists will be selected on Nov. 23. The winner will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 10.
