Orange tight end is interning in ESPN's programming department
Syracuse junior tight end Cameron MacPherson will provide periodic updates on Cuse.com from his summer internship at ESPN. His observations from his initital days on the job at the Worldwide Leader are below:
This summer, I am fortunate enough to be interning at ESPN. I am working in the programming and acquisitions department, which is chiefly responsible for acquiring the rights to sports properties and creating the programming schedules across ESPN's various networks. Within the department, I work with the college sports team. It has been awesome to work on the strategy and planning that goes into creating the network's football and basketball schedules.
The experience has been incredible so far. As an athlete, it is truly fascinating to see the scheduling process from the other side. I have realized that I was only vaguely aware of all the factors that go into the decision-making process as far as which games ESPN televises. I mainly thought of each game as an opportunity for the telecaster to improve ratings.
What I'm learning, though, is that there are far more factors to consider than I ever could have imagined. The programming team has to balance viewership, contractual obligations, and the responsibility of providing a solid and diverse lineup each week that serves fans, conferences, advertisers, and more. It is a complicated puzzle, and I am enjoying working on its various components.
Even apart from my job, the experience has been very rewarding. It has been fun to get settled in to Bristol and to meet my fellow interns. Not surprisingly, we've spent a lot of time bonding over sports. Whether it is through soccer at the field just outside our dorms, to pickup basketball at the rec center with the likes of Chauncey Billups, or simply gathering around to watch the NBA Finals or the FIFA Women's World Cup, we have used our common interest in sports to forge close friendships.
In both the interns and the employees alike, I have been very impressed with the passion of the people that work at ESPN. I'm thrilled to be here, and I am looking forward to providing more updates as I continue working on exciting projects.
